Baby Animals: Heritage Breeds at the Banke

April 18, 2024

Under the big white tent at Strawbery Banke Museum, the air will soon come alive with the enchanting symphony of springtime. The air is filled with the joyful sound of lambs bleating, calves mooing, and piglets oinking, harmonizing with the delighted sounds of children "oohing and ahhing" at what can only be described as the cutest lesson in agricultural history.

Welcome to "Baby Animals: Heritage Breeds at the Banke," where the magic of the past meets the marvels of the present. From Saturday, April 27 through May 5, you’re invited to learn about domestic livestock typical of the region from the 17th century to the present at this family-friendly event.

Led by Peter Cook,  Guest Curator, and expert breeders from farms across New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York, visitors are treated to captivating tales and insights into rare heritage breeds. Discover the unique characteristics, special care, and importance of these barnyard animals in today's world as you engage in enlightening conversations.

While petting is not allowed for the safety and well-being of both animals and visitors, the joy of capturing memories is encouraged. Snap away and fill your camera roll with adorable photos and selfies—a memento of a day filled with wonder and discovery.

But the excitement doesn't end there! On Sundays of the event, from 11 AM to 2 PM, Dan Smith, Restoration Assistant and Museum Beekeeper, takes center stage with a mesmerizing honey extraction demonstration in the Lawrence J. Yerdon Visitor Center Lecture Hall. It's a sweet addition to an already delightful experience—one that promises to leave visitors buzzing with excitement.
